About that particle accelator I was so upset about last year…

Well, it appears that the end has not (yet) come to pass, and the first Large Hadron Collider experiments have been successful.

The world’s largest atom smasher’s first experiment went off today without a hitch, paving the way toward the recreation of post-big bang conditions.

More experimentation to come.

We Swiss and all the other countries which are involved know what we’re doing.
    … theoretically ;)

But seriously, being scared is a strange keystone of human existence. Especially if your daily life seems pretty secure. End-of-the-world cults, prophets and TV-channels, which are occupied with natural disasters show this quite well.
Scientific secured verdicts are combined with sensation snatching speculations, so that the viewer might have some serious doubts, if such things could happen to her-/himself.

Natural disasters aside, there are of course those, which are possibly caused from technology. And suddenly some scientists – generally from other areas of expertise – get free publicity. Of course they don’t care If Ragnarok actually won’t happen then. Their name is out and one can be wrong every now and then, n’est-ce pas?

But yeah… the thought of the end of the world and that one can probably prevent it by ones own initiative are way to attractive to be dismissed. Save the planet! Save the universe! HUZZAH!

True…I was being somewhat facetious with this post. Although I was genuinely frightened when I first heard about this-the title at least is serious.
