Bejing’s Olympic Village In Playing Cards

August 19, 2008 at 12:22 pm (art, movies/video/clips, neat things)

From MAKE, check out this cool video showing the village of cards made by champion cardstacker Brian Berg, for the Olympics. It contains 140,000 cards.

Very impressive.

I had a lesson from the card stacker himself at BODY last year! He now lives in Santa Fe btw. He taught a workshop of about 20 of us how to use his technique, which is a really cool way of leaning 4 cards together to create a strong (for cards at least) layer that can be stacked upon with more layers. The cards lean on eachother’s centerpoints in a square and then two cards are placed flat on top to create the roof. I was definitely the brightest one in the class, being the first one to make a 9 layer tower. Booyaah!

That’s really cool, Tyler. I had no idea that he lives in Santa Fe.

My best is an eight layer tower using no more that 2-card inverted V shaped supports. I may try that 4-card structure though.
