Plants Communicate!

From Boing Boing, this is so amazing I don’t even know where to start. With a quote, I guess:

Recent research from Vidi researcher Josef Stuefer at the Radboud University Nijmegen reveals that plants have their own chat systems that they can use to warn each other.

Therefore plants cannot be considered boring and passive organisms that just stand there waiting to be cut off or eaten up. Many plants form internal communications networks and are able to exchange information efficiently.

Plants such as clover and strawberry form networks and use them to communicate; the article compares them to computer networks. When one plant gets attacked by a caterpillar, it uses the network to alert its comrades. The other plants then strengthen their defenses.

One weird downside is that viruses appear to be able to travel through the network, knocking out whole systems of plants with great efficiency.
