Plastics Made of Plants

New technological developments suggest that it may soon be possible to use trees and other plants to produce plastic on a large scale, thus lessening our dependence on oil (which currently plays a huge role in the manufacture of plastics). It is not clear yet, though, to me, that this process is altogether more energy efficient than the one we use now. It’s also not clear that the resulting material is necessarily any more biodegradable and/or safe than the ones we use now. And if they aren’t, well, then, using it may not be practical after all. We can’t afford to lose any more trees, anyway.
