Back!

June 10, 2007 at 5:18 pm (80 Proof, amazing things, art)

The festival was a great success. Many wonderful and talented people came. Both nights were packed with excellent performances, most of which were unplanned. I do believe that every one of our young guests (80 Proofers included) performed at least once, ranging from music (TONS of music: piano guitar ukulele drums vocals and more) to dancing to poetry. Other highlights included the impressive pirate costumes, playing in the muddy river, drawing together, and painting, drawing, and scraping clayboards with my mom.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that last night’s bonfire was the very best part of the weekend. As we had hoped, we built a very large fire, and then threw homework in by the fistful. With each sacrifice to the flames, someone would scream…

“FUCK THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM”

“FUCK STANDARDIZED TESTING”

“FUCK THE FACT THAT THE ONLY LANGUAGE WE HAVE TO EXPRESS ANGER IS THE LANGUAGE OF RAPE”

“AND FUCK ANDREW FUCKING JACKSON”

And then everyone would join in wild, primal screams.

After awhile of that, out came the instruments of catharsis. An accordion, drums, hand shakers, guitars, flasks of unidentified liquid. And out of the thrashing organism we had become rose beautiful, terrifying, percussive music, the kind of song that pirates and gypsies might make together. Everybody joined in, dancing, singing, howling, banging knives against bottles. People were writhing. People were making great graceful leaps over the fire. People were, in a word, sandwrecked.

We are thrilled at how it all went. May we have many more!

Art and pictures will be going up later in the week.

[…] I have stared into the soul of my generation, and I have seen power there. There were adults present for this, our parents and others, people who have sometimes said those lies to us (that it is up to us to save the world, and why don’t we give a shit). They saw what we all saw: fire. Fire and outrage and love. They stared at us for hours, motionless, unable to join in but unable to look away. Paralyzed in the face our strength, our mania, our madness there in the motion of the flames growing taller. […]
