Provocative Installation Piece: An Iraqi-American Artist, a White Room, and Paintball Guns

May 18, 2007 at 1:36 pm (art, neat things)

Well this is interesting. Wafaa Bilal has locked himself in a white room for the entire month of May and is inviting internet users to fire paintballs at him over the internet.

Bilal’s installation – titled Domestic Tension – disturbingly raises awareness about the life of the Iraqi people and the home confinement they face due to the both the violent and the virtual war they face on a daily basis.

He wears no protection other than goggles, so the shots fired at him (and so far there have been more than 6,500 taken) may cause real injury. There’s an interview with him here in which he discusses his intentions in more detail, his background, and what he’s finding about those that choose to pull the virtual trigger. Really very thought-provoking.
